30th Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® Rolls into Joplin, Mo May 17-19 Truck beauty contest will benefit community in rebuilding after 2011 tornado

May 17, 2012

The 30th annual Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® competition will be held May 17-19 on the grounds adjacent to the Joplin, Mo. Speedco, which is located just off Route I-44 at Exit 11.  The truck contest will be the signature event for All Roads Lead to Joplin, a group developed to help raise funds to benefit the YMCA of Joplin’s community disaster recovery efforts following a devastating tornado in May 2011.

The Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® competition is the premier truck beauty contest for actively working trucks. Owner/operator truckers from across the United States and Canada will compete for cash and prizes valued at approximately $25,000.  Additionally, 12 lucky drivers will be selected to have their truck featured in the 2013 Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs®calendar.

“The 30th Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® will be a celebration of hard working truckers and will contribute to the rebuilding efforts that are still needed in Joplin,” said Chris Guerrero, global brand manager, Shell Rotella.

The Joplin tornado caused widespread devastation and loss of life.  All Roads Lead to Joplin is an informal association comprised of a group of corporate and local supporters with a goal of raising funds to benefit the YMCA of Joplin’s Community disaster recovery efforts. Supporters include Shell Lubricants, Speedco, Bridgestone and Fleetguard.

Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® will feature daily events, attractions and concerts from Thursday through Saturday.

-Thursday night’s concert will feature local Joplin talent Kenny Foster, Maggie Speaks, who plays a variety of music geared to get people out of their seats and on their feet and special guest Chassidy.

-The annual trucker’s parade will be held on Friday in Joplin at 6 p.m. and will showcase Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® contestants, local motorcycle and custom car clubs.  The parade will proceed through downtown Joplin; where the trucks will park to give local residents an opportunity to vote on their favorites.  At sundown, downtown will light up with a special fireworks celebration sponsored by Fleetguard.

-The fireworks will be followed by the music of Walrus at the SuperRigs event site.  The high energy classic rock band will perform a wide range of music from the 50’s through 80’s.

-Saturday will include an on-site live auction in which all proceeds will be donated to benefit the Joplin Family YMCA Outreach program.  A number of racing items will be auctioned, including the deck lid from the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil car of AJ Allmendinger which featured Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® in the Cup race at Darlington on May 12.

-Puller Larry Koester and his Shell Rotella®-sponsored mini-modified tractor will attend all three days of the event. Koester is a multi-time mini-modified division champion in the National Tractor Pull Association.

– The all-new Rotella Road Show will make its debut at SuperRigs.  The expanded event vehicle uses visual demonstrations to highlight the hardworking capabilities and benefits of Shell Rotella® heavy duty engine oils.

-Grand re-opening celebration of the Joplin Speedco which was severely damaged by the tornado.

Award Categories

In total, 24 working trucks receive awards for categories such as Best of Show, Tractor, Tractor/Trailer Combination and Classic.  New for this year, the event will also recognize the one lucky trucker that receives the most votes on the Shell Rotella Virtual SuperRigs™ site (www.virtualsuperrigs.com). In tribute to hardworking drivers everywhere, there will be a new prize category that recognizes one driver for how hard he/she works in keeping the economy moving!

The truck beauty contest is free to all participants.  Every entrant, or while supplies last, will receive a gift package.  Shell ROTELLA SuperRigs® truck beauty contest entrants can register on site upon arrival and enter the judging line whenever they are ready.  Judging will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18, and between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday, May 19.  Judging takes about 20 minutes, and contestants do not need to be present to win.
