This Illinois couple used fishing technology to develop a rewarding—though unusual—part-time career.
Dennis and Tammy Watters of Moro, Illinois are a highly successful husband-and-wife team on the semi-pro crappie tournament scene. Their skills at spider-rigging or long-pole trolling and figuring out the best ways to add crappies to their live well have put them on the podium at some of the country’s most prestigious and profitable crappie tournaments. Sometimes the best part of hunting and fishing is the story telling.
Go to any truck stop near any large reservoir in the U.S., ask if there are any big fish in the river below the dam and you will probably hear some version of this story. After hearing that same basic story in numerous locations during the past 30 years, and after several sincere efforts to find and interview the skindiver(s) for what would appear to be an interesting fishing story, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are either a lot of skindivers who have been scared out of a lot of spillways by a lot of monster catfish, or this story is just another example of a phenomenon that sociologists refer to as a modern-day legend. The baying of hounds is music to the ears of coon hunters
You’ve missed something special if you’ve never heard a ‘coon hound work a trail on a crisp fall night. You release your dog or dogs, then stand enveloped in darkness. The chill night air insinuates itself through any thin spots in your clothes. You shuffle your feet to keep them warm, and dig your hands into your pockets, waiting. Then from out of the darkness one of the dogs opens up. The long, baying cry bypasses your brain and goes directly to your spine as a shiver that ends with the hair on the back of your neck standing on end. Nov 1, 2007 - 12:22:20 PM
Don’t just rendezvous with fellow truckers for coffee at a truckstop—plan a hunting trip.
Truck drivers who manage to schedule routes and layovers to coincide with hunt dates organized by friends in distant states should check DOT laws in any states they will cross. While it’s legal to transport cased guns in private vehicles in any state, some states have stringent laws about transporting firearms in a commercial vehicle. Oct 1, 2007 - 2:31:55 PM
