Epes Transport System, a North Carolina-based truckload carrier, was recently named the Walmart General Merchandise Gold Carrier of the Year, an elite award given each year to a Walmart service partner that demonstrates excellence in operations, customer service and consistent performance.

“It is an honor for Epes Transport to be named the Gold Carrier of the Year,” said Phil Peck, EPES vice president of customer service and planning. “When you can provide a certain level of service that is recognized by the largest shippers in the world as superior, then it is clear that you have established guidelines and procedures that are operationally sound and effective.”

This award is given to carriers with 1000 trucks or less in their fleet. Walmart’s customers, focusing on each carrier’s ability to provide a high level of customer service and support, defined criteria for the award. Epes was presented with a granite plaque at Walmart’s recent carrier conference in Rogers, Ark.

“We have one of the best teams of professional drivers here at Epes,” said Melissa Davis, Epes director of recruiting. “We are very proud about the caliber of our driver force, as well as the exceptional service they provide.”

Epes Transport’s award from Walmart is one of several honors the company has received this year. The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) recently announced that Epes has been named a top nominee for one of the TCA’s Best Fleets to Drive For and company driver Freddy Bell was chosen as a finalist for the TCA Driver of the Year award. Additionally, TCA also recently named Epes driver Marcus Beam as the 2011 Highway Angel of the Year for rescuing a mother and her two children from an overturned vehicle while on the job. Beam was awarded a trophy at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho on December 17, 2011.
